As the series progresses, George struggles to tell friends and family about her relationship with Mae, to Mae's frustration.

Comic actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge stars as the titular character on the series, which is based on Waller-Bridge's 2013 one-woman show of the same name.

The story follows the relationship between two Irish teens (Daisy Edgar-Jones, Paul Mescal) as they leave their small town to head to college in Dublin. Abrahamson directs the first six half-hour episodes, and Hettie Macdonald handles the rest.
