Chelsea is a beautiful borough for beautiful people, but it has a dark underside of deprivation, violence, greed - and murder. Bodies have a way of showing up, and things are rarely what they seem, but Max's determination and acuity mean he'll find a way to root out the truth and bring those responsible to justice - regardless of their wealth or status. Max has assistance in his investigations from his partner, no nonsense DS Priya Shamsie (Sonita Henry, Krypton). Also on his team is research and tech queen DC Jess Lombard (Lucy Phelps, Holby City), rookie officer DC Connor Pollock (Peter Bankolé, Peaky Blinders) and brilliant, if occasionally daunting, Chief Forensics Officer Ashley Wilton (Sophie Stone, Shetland). The cases the team take on allow viewers to visit a diverse cross section of Chelsea life, spanning the mansions of the super-rich to the council flats of the World's End Estate, and the rarefied corridors of a prestigious international school to the leafy melancholy of Brompton Cemetery and the bustle of the King's Road. Miss Scarlet and the Duke

PBS • 2020 • IMDb: 7.5
miss-scarlet-and-the-duke-pbs-season-1-release-date.jpg

Eliza Scarlet joins forces with a Scotland Yard Inspector to solve crime in 19th century London. When her father dies, Eliza Scarlet finds herself facing a difficult choice. As an unmarried woman, she faces poverty without a husband to provide for her -- unless she takes on the challenge of running her late father's detective agency, which would be unthinkable for a respectable Victorian lady. Fortunately, she finds an unlikely partner in the unconventional Detective Inspector William Wellington of Scotland Yard, known as "The Duke," and the pair begin to tackle the crimes and mysteries of Victorian London together. Most of the best detectives come in duos, but chances are there’s never been a duo quite as spicy and delightful as Eliza Scarlet and Inspector William Wellington…or a show that will check as many must-watch boxes as Miss Scarlet & The Duke! It’s a smart, edgy mystery series set in 1882 Victorian London, with a fearless, quick-witted, and sassy female aspiring detective facing all manner of obstacles, from Victorian conventions to the efforts of her rakish and wily longtime friend/competition/potential love interest! Over Season 1’s six episodes, you’ll root for Eliza and her ever-growing band of outsiders as she navigates a man’s world using her guile, wit, and intellect to crack the case and prove herself. And you’ll delight in the crackling will-they-won’t-they energy between Eliza and the Duke as they alternately help and infuriate one another! Who are Miss Scarlet and The Duke? Eliza Scarlet is the whip-smart daughter of renowned London private detective Henry Scarlet, who raised her to believe that she might one day follow in his footsteps. When Henry suddenly dies, a heartbroken Eliza discovers his considerable debts, and her only option for survival is to take on the family business—which shouldn’t be so hard, considering the countless childhood hours spent at her father’s side learning the latest forensic techniques, and the countless hours she’s already putting in as a secret amateur sleuth! And though Victorian conventions conspire to keep Eliza—a woman!—from private investigation, she’ll use her pluck and guile to pay the bills and keep on her feet. William Wellington, aka The Duke, was a fatherless child of London’s streets when Henry Scarlet saw promise in the boy and took him under his wing, mentoring him as he rose through the police academy to become Detective Inspector. Despite his suave demeanor, it’s William’s wily ways and street smarts that make him such a talented detective—and keep Eliza’s blood boiling! Years before, Henry tasked William with looking after Eliza, which has made their long relationship…complicated. At once an authority figure and a rakish ladies’ man, William is sometimes Eliza’s protector, sometimes her competition; sometimes her adversary and sometimes her partner. Whatever the dynamic, it’s always built on genuine caring—and quite often shot through with tantalizing tension. Renewal Update: MASTERPIECE and Element 8 Entertainment have announced a second season of Miss Scarlet and The Duke, the popular mystery starring Kate Phillips as the fearless, first-ever female detective in Victorian London and Stuart Martin as her childhood friend and potential love interest Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington. Almost eight million viewers tuned in to the series’ first season, which premiered on PBS in January as part of MASTERPIECE ‘s 50th anniversary lineup. It was streamed 3.6 million times. “Miss Scarlet and The Duke was an instant fan favorite,” says Susanne Simpson, executive producer of MASTERPIECE. “Our audience couldn’t resist its lighthearted tone and the appealing characters so wonderfully portrayed by Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin. We’re delighted the show will return for a second season.”

Whitstable Pearl explores the dark undercurrents of murder and debauchery swirling beneath the surface of the picturesque English seaside town of Whitstable, famous for its native oysters and buffeted by the prevailing winds and spray of the North Sea. When local celebrity Pearl Nolan, chief proprietor of the eponymous Whitstable Pearl restaurant and a newly formed detective agency, discovers the body of Vinnie, a close family friend, she takes it upon herself to investigate what she believes to be murder. Standing in the way of her detective work is DCI Mike McGuire (Howard Charles, The Musketeers), the new Kent police chief who has transferred from London in an attempt to escape from his past. Pearl and Mike clash at first, but then Mike becomes the only other person to share Pearl's belief that Vinnie was murdered. When a second body shows up, Pearl finds herself pulled into the seedy underbelly of this picturesque town. The British seaside holiday will never be the same again. Set beneath huge skies and amid the lengthening shadows of a picture postcard town just miles from London, the friction between the locals and the moneyed arrivals from the city is palpable as centuries of village tradition grates against the inevitable pressure of money and gentrification. More about Whitstable Pearl Pearl Nolan (Kerry Godliman, After Life) has always dreamed of becoming a detective, however an unplanned pregnancy in her early twenties left her police career in tatters before it ever truly began. Instead, Pearl resolved to pour all her energy into raising her son, Charlie (Rohan Nedd, Safe), alongside working with her mum, Dolly (Frances Barber, Mr. Holmes, Doctor Who), to build the family seafood restaurant into a thriving business. Eighteen years have passed since then, and the restaurant has become an iconic feature of their coastal hometown, Whitstable. With Charlie all grown up and making plans for his gap year, Pearl can't help shaking the feeling that there is more to life than just serving oysters and cava. Determined to rekindle her passion for life, Pearl sets up a private detective agency. Known amongst the community for her caring and compassionate nature, locals soon flock to her with all manner of cases. When a new mysterious client arrives in Whitstable and demands Pearl investigate an old family friend, she is left feeling conflicted over what she should do. Pearl reluctantly agrees to take on the case, believing she can help get her friend out of whatever trouble he's managed to land himself in this time. However, when his body is discovered under gruesome circumstances, Pearl is unwilling to accept the official verdict that it was a tragic accident. Pearl's refusal to believe it pure coincidence, leads her into conflict with DCI Mike McGuire (Howard Charles, The Musketeers), a new arrival in Whitstable. Despite getting off to a bad start, the two investigators find themselves bonding over a shared desire to help those overlooked by the system. Resolving to put their differences aside the two strike up an unlikely partnership that sees them investigate a range of crimes together from an estate agent force fed marmalade to a cold case that proves anything but. Alongside lead writer Øystein Karlsen, the rest of the writing team includes Mike Walden (Marcella, The Frankenstein Chronicles, Uwantme2killhim), Rachel Flowerday (Malory Towers, Father Brown, The Moonstone) and Alastair Galbraith (Strike Back, Doc Martin, River City). The producer of the series is Guy Hescott (Agatha Raisin) and the casting director is Rob Kelly. Executive Producers are Tony Wood, Anna Burns, Richard Tulk-Hart and Nadia Jaynes for Buccaneer as well as Øystein Karlsen and Julie Wassmer. Baptiste

baptiste-pbs-season-2-release-date.jpg

Julien Baptiste is back at work as a private detective, finding runaway teenagers who don’t want to be found. But he is not the man we left at the end of Season 1. A horrific personal tragedy has left him heartbroken. He has grown estranged from his wife Celia and is looking for any distraction to consume him, be it the bottom of a bottle or a new case. When Julien sees the British Ambassador to Hungary make a televised appeal to help locate her missing family, he finds that new case. Traveling to the mountain resort where Emma Chambers was vacationing with her husband and two sons, Julien entrenches himself in her high-profile world. While at first finding Julien’s intrusion surprising and somewhat delusional, Chambers decides he brings a different type of determined hope that will be integral to getting her family back. Viewers can also expect the narrative to alternate between two time periods, 14 months apart. “One [time period] informs the other,” says Season 2 director Hong Khaou. “You’re kind of kept in the dark, but as you progress everything becomes clear. It’s a style of writing that forces you to engage with the story as information unfolds—it’s very exciting and delightful.” Turkish-born, French actor Tchéky Karyo returns as the stubborn, but highly empathic French detective who formerly appeared in the TV series The Missing. “I admire Julien’s instinct,” says Karyo. “He’s not formal and he’s able to walk on the wild side. He’s able to listen to people. I feel I could be good friends with Julien.” Fiona Shaw joins the cast as workaholic British Ambassador, Emma Chambers. Shaw describes Emma’s emptiness and dislocation upon losing her family: “To be in a different country when your family goes missing, to not be able to go home, to be the ambassador—all these rather lonely feelings. …Emma meets Julien Baptiste and they both decide to go in a contrary direction to where the police are looking.” Alongside its two leads, Season 2 has a big international cast including Ace Bhatti (Bohemian Rhapsody) as Nadeem Chadhuri, the Ambassador’s assistant whose role is to protect Emma and the British Government. Hungarian actress Dorka Cryllus plays Zsofia Arslan, the lead police officer whose parents were Turkish immigrants. Fellow countrywoman Gabriella Hámori portrays far-right politician, Kamilla Agoston. Miklós Béres (Captives) is tattooed suspect, Andras Juszt. The Chambers family is portrayed by Adrian Rawlins as loyal husband Richard; Stuart Campbell as Alex, the son who’s always online; and Conrad Khan as traumatized, silent son Will. Anastasia Hille (The Missing, Wanderlust) plays Julien’s exasperated wife Celia.
